First Day

I am actually really excited about this course. I spent my summer in Washington D.C. and worked in my Representative's office on Capitol Hill. Working in that aspect gave me a great experience with the world opposite Journalism. Instead of being the one to conduct interviews and make the endless phone calls to set up times with sources, I was on the other end. I was the office reporters were calling and showing up at the door with cameras, waiting around for a quick interview with my Congressman. I realized that there were many problems with the information Journalists were gathering and the stories they were delivering to the public. From the perspective of the Hill and the objective of sharing our views and issues with the public and our constituents, I realized that the news wasn't covering that. It was all about the horse race. Who is up in the polls? Who has more fundraising money behind them? I wonder why the news isn't sharing our Congressman's views on healthcare or the war in Iraq. People need to care about the issues at hand instead of voting on personality, name recognition or party lines. I am excited to begin this class and expose myself to others views on the state of Journalism and where it's going in the future.
